BROKEN HEALS: The Making of the Story      

2015: The Beginning

Divorce over – my anger set in and with it came a need for revenge. I appeared outwardly calm but it was a lie – everything inside me had broken including my health and I was in a silent seething rage.

I met Mary at the bus stop. She was a complete stranger to me but her story wasn’t. I soon found out that she and I shared similar stories.

Mary suddenly appeared from nowhere and for some bizarre reason she took me, a complete stranger into her ‘behind closed doors’ life.

“My husband is mean and treats me bad. He calls me a whore if I speak to my brothers or other men in the family. He came to my job the other day and started shouting and cursing me. When my boss asked him to leave, he accused him of being my lover and tried to attack him. The other men in the office tackled him and sat on him until the police came. I was terrified to press charges as he had threatened to kill all my family including our three children. I knew that when I went back home, I would be badly beaten or worse.”

The bus arrived then and we went our separate ways. We never spoke again. I knew then that Mary had needed someone to hear her voice.

Her story brought back the horrors of my years of abuse and in that moment my need for revenge died to be replaced by becoming another voice through my writings for other women of domestic abuse. A voice of empowerment, inspiration and hope.
